The play “Romeo and Juliet” by William Shakespeare is based on a love story which acts as the foundation over which several other themes are built. Although the play addresses other themes such as individuality against society in which a conflict is created that whether an individual should forego social responsibilities for individual pursuits. There is also the idea of social class and leadership as can be implied by the presence of the servants. The main aim of this paper is to discuss how the love story in the book is supported as the main idea behind the play and not any other.

The play is mainly about a love story of the main characters Romeo and Juliet who are determined to protect their love which seems to be forbidden love by the society in which they live. The beautiful and obsessive love shared between the two teenagers compels them to do everything that can nurture and hence conserve it. The love story is not only limited between Romeo and Juliet but spreads beyond as all the characters in the play talk about love. Everybody has a different opinion of what love is all about. Mercutio believes is just an excuse to get sexual satisfaction and the man entangled with it is not only left dumb but also weakened while Frier Laurence argues that love comes with responsibilities although maybe passionate. The leading story of Romeo and Juliet’s story is transformative, pure and exhilarating. The two uses words to transform their activities during the day to escape into the night.  Love in the play is blamed for violence and deaths which even manifests itself through Romeo and Juliet Committing suicide.

Some of the quotes that show that indeed the play is about a love story include the following:

My only love, sprung from my only hate!
Too early seen unknown, and known too late!
Prodigious birth of love it is to me
That I must love a loathed enemy. (I.5.139-142)

What's in a name? That which we call a rose
By any other word would smell as sweet. (II.2 .43-44)

These violent delights have violent ends
And in their triumph die, like fire and powder,
Which, as they kiss, consume. (II.6.9-11)

See what a scourge is laid upon your hate,
That heaven finds means to kill your joys with love. (V.3. 292-293)

The play may also portray a different picture in which the minds of the audience may break their monotony. The fate of not only Romeo and Juliet but also for other characters is a force that none of them can escape. The author uses foreshadowing especially when the two reference without knowing about what their death will be like. In addition, they forsake their names and their social responsibilities in order to be together. Thus, the play is mainly about love and its effects in the society.

The play Romeo and Juliet cannot be about anything else except about a love story. If there is any, then it is either building the love story or it is based on it. The two main characters are in love that makes them to compromise their relationships with family and friends. All characters also talk about love believe different. Other stories are only meant support the main story. Therefore, the play is about a love story and not about something else.
